DISASTER PHILANTHROPY

From 2020–2022, the Sozosei Foundation made grants in response to disasters. Priority was given to places where Otsuka had a presence globally, with a focus on climate-related disasters, long-term mental health resiliency following disasters, and COVID-19. When COVID-19 swept across the United States in the Spring of 2020, the Foundation had just formalized its governance structure and was in the midst of a national search for its inaugural executive director. Simultaneously, the Foundation moved swiftly to address the immediate needs of patients, healthcare workers, and families impacted by COVID-19.

RESILIENT COMMUNITIES PROGRAM

From 2020–2022, the Sozosei Foundation designed and operated the Resilient Communities Program (RCP), supporting under-resourced communities within a 50-mile radius of Otsuka's offices in the United States.

Working through three community foundation partners — the Baltimore Community Foundation, San Joaquin Community Foundation, and the Community Foundation of New Jersey — RCP grants supported organizations in Baltimore City, Maryland; Stockton, California; and Camden, Newark, Paterson, and Trenton in New Jersey addressing:

1.    Access to the arts and/or creative placemaking;
2.    Climate change;
3.    Food security;
4.    Mental and physical health (including kidney health);
5.    Racial justice; and
6.    Social and legal services.

These cities were chosen because of their geographic proximity to Otsuka's offices in the United States and the potential for local nonprofits, community foundations, and community leaders to build resilient, vibrant communities.
